Bev Brown, a cyclist who had been inspired by the Tour de France, decided to bring some Tour de France-style racing to the San Bernardino Mountains in 2000. So, Rim Nordics SoCal Mountain Stage Race was created.

The race became a memorial for Mark Reynolds, a mountain biker from Orange Country who was attacked by mountain lions while riding in Whiting Ranch four years ago. We were proud to have Mark win his category in the stage race the year before and decided to donate something to his charity, Brown stated.

The Mark Reynolds Memorial Children’s First Bike Fund encourages safe cycling for children. Donations go towards purchasing new helmets and bikes for children who are less fortunate. Reynolds, an avid cyclist, raised funds to buy helmets and bikes for children. He worked with churches to help children whose families couldn’t afford the equipment.

Brown stated that Mark believed it was important to get children started early. Rim Nordic does not charge an entry fee. The number of riders who sign up for the race will determine the amount that is donated to the fund. Brown stated that I don’t make a fixed amount. Brown said that I give what I believe we can each year.

Due to the economy’s ill health, Brown isn’t certain how much Rim Nordic will donate this year. In 2007, there were 80 competitors. She said that we have several dozen riders who have signed up. Because we don’t charge a late fee, we usually receive a lot of same day registrations. I hope that we don’t fall below 60 for this stage race.

The SoCal Mountain Stage race features three events in two days: a hill climb on Saturday and dirt criterium Sunday, and cross-country on Monday.

Next up is the XC Series race 3, also included in round #6 of Cal State XC & SD Series. For more information, visit rimnordic.com.
